Why where you sit matters more than any other adjustment in your space

Most people who want to improve their space start the same way: new plants, different colors, rearranged furniture. All of that has its place in BTB Feng Shui. But there is one principle that comes before everything else — and getting it right alone can shift how you work, sleep, and make decisions.

It is called the command position. And it is the first thing I assess in every consultation.

Where you sit determines what you are capable of in that space.

What Is the Command Position?

The command position — also called the power position — is the placement rule that governs where you should sit, sleep, and spend your most important time in any room. It fulfills three criteria:

→ You can see the entrance without turning around.

→ You are diagonal to the door, not directly across from it.

→ You have a solid wall behind you, not a window or open space.

In BTB Feng Shui, the command position applies to three places above all: your desk, your bed, and your main seating area.

Why It Works

When your back faces the door, your nervous system registers a low-grade but persistent alertness — waiting for what might come from behind. That tension never fully releases. Over a working day, it quietly drains focus, shortens patience, and erodes the quality of thinking. Over months, it contributes to the kind of fatigue people blame on stress, when the real cause is positional.

Environmental psychology confirms it: people in door-visible positions consistently report greater feelings of control, clarity, and security. Ancient Feng Shui practice and modern behavioral science describe the same thing.

How to Apply It

Desk: Reposition so you can see the door from your seat. If the layout doesn't allow it, place a small mirror that reflects the entrance — in BTB, a mirror restores the command position energetically when the physical position can't be achieved.

Bed: Headboard against a solid wall, positioned diagonally from the door, with a clear sightline to the entrance. Never directly in line with the door — in BTB this is called the coffin position, and it creates restlessness and vulnerability during sleep.

Main seating: The chair or sofa where you most often think, talk, or decide should also offer a view of the room's entry. This applies to client seating and meeting rooms in commercial spaces too.

Position first. Before the plants, before the colors, before anything else.

Your Two-Minute Audit

Walk through the three key spaces in your home right now and ask:

→ Desk: Can you see the door without turning around?

→ Bed: Solid wall behind you? Clear sightline to the entrance?

→ Living space: Does your primary seat face the room's entry?

If the answer to any of these is no — that is your starting point. In years of BTB consultations, I have seen more significant shifts from command position corrections than from almost any other single change. It is foundational for a reason.
